Tsunami Dead Remembered In Sri Lanka One Month After Tsunami

January 26, 2005

by Kevin Caruso

January 26, 2005, marked the one month anniversary of the tsunami disaster, and many Sri Lankans lit candles and chanted prayers as they remembered those who died in the tsunami.

A highway along the coast of Sri Lanka, close to where the tsunami hit, was lined with colorful Buddhist flags and bright candles.

At a temple near Galle, over 2,000 oil lamps were lit in memory of the tsunami victims. Visitors placed flowers near the lamps and monks chanted prayers on a loudspeaker.

There are more that 38,000 confirmed deaths to date in Sri Lanka.

And the overall death toll for the December 26, 2004 tsunami, from all of the affected countries, is over 228,000.
